The Alana Series

2017

Curiosity is the driving force of discovery and connection. As a teacher, I admire my student’s curiosity every day. They remind me not to lose that spirit in my own work, and to pursue connection by learning about others and pushing my own boundaries. I’ve held each cup for hours. Carving intuitively, I let the patterns emerge, watching for rhythm, watching where marks lead to discoveries. Some cups are threaded with flowers, some give way to geometry and architecture. The value in the cups comes largely from their differences. The variety embodied in the cups reflects my students’ individuality and their participation within communities.  My final pieces welcome tactile discovery and bring the holder closer to the process of making.
